Canopy Growth boekt kleiner verlies op hogere vraag, verbeterde marges

Wietproducent Canopy Growth Corp rapporteerde woensdag een kleiner kernverlies over het tweede kwartaal, geholpen door een hogere verkoop van zijn met cannabis verrijkte drankjes en kostenbesparende maatregelen.

Canopy heeft zijn inspanningen om winstgevend te worden verdubbeld, waaronder kostenbesparingen door ontslagen, terugtrekking uit sommige internationale markten, winkelsluitingen en afstoting van zijn detailhandelsactiviteiten in Canada.

Vorige maand zei het bedrijf dat het een holding zal oprichten om snel toegang te krijgen tot de Verenigde Staten, een markt die naar verwachting tegen 2026 meer dan 50 miljard dollar zal bedragen.

De Amerikaanse president Joe Biden heeft onlangs geprobeerd de classificatie van marihuana te herzien en een mogelijke wetswijziging zal naar verwachting de cannabisproducenten verder ten goede komen.

Het bedrijf boekte een aangepast kernverlies van C$78,1 miljoen ($58,13 miljoen) in het tweede kwartaal, vergeleken met een verlies van C$162,6 miljoen een jaar eerder.

Wietproducent Canopy Growth Corp boekte donderdag een groter kernverlies over het derde kwartaal en zei dat het zijn personeelsbestand met ongeveer 60% zou inkrimpen als onderdeel van zijn kostenbesparingsprogramma.

Het aangepaste kernverlies van het bedrijf uit Ontario nam toe tot C$87,5 miljoen ($65,29 miljoen) in het kwartaal dat eindigde op 31 december, van C$67,4 miljoen een jaar eerder.

April 30, 2024 - Justice Department will move to reclassify marijuana in a historic shift, AP sources say

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will move to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug,
The Associated Press has learned, a historic shift to generations of American drug policy that could have wide ripple effects across the country.
The agency’s move, confirmed to the AP on Tuesday by five people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive regulatory review, clears the last significant regulatory hurdle before the agency’s biggest policy change in more than 50 years can take effect.

Once OMB signs off, the DEA will take public comment on the plan to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD. It moves pot to Schedule III, alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids, following a recommendation from the federal Health and Human Services Department. After the public comment period and a review by an administrative judge, the agency would eventually publish the final rule.
