Tetra Pak introduces sustainable homogenizers crafted with low-emission stainless steel

SWEDEN – Tetra Pak, the Swedish multinational food processing and packaging solutions company, has announced a significant expansion of its homogenizer portfolio with the introduction of machines crafted with Outokumpu Circle Green stainless steel.

This material, recognized for its reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional stainless-steel options, marks a significant stride in Tetra Pak’s sustainability efforts.

The incorporation of Circle Green stainless steel aligns with Tetra Pak’s commitment to sustainability and will be available as an option for all homogenizer models in Europe starting June, with a global rollout planned later this year.

This move underscores Tetra Pak’s dedication to leveraging innovative materials to reduce environmental impact across its product range.

The steel industry, accounting for approximately 7 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, necessitates innovation in materials to mitigate overall greenhouse gas emissions.

Tetra Pak’s introduction of homogenizers crafted with Circle Green stainless steel aims to address this need, offering a tangible solution to reduce emissions in the food and beverage industry.

Homogenization is a critical process in the production of various food and beverage products, from dairy beverages to table sauces.

Tetra Pak’s new homogenizers aim to provide manufacturers with an avenue to decrease their Scope 3 emissions, thereby facilitating progress towards net-zero emissions goals.

Niklas Wass, executive vice president for Stainless Europe at Outokumpu, said: “Low-emission stainless steel is at the heart of sustainability solutions across the world. It plays a pivotal role in accelerating the green transition, and the food and beverage industry is a good example of where low-emission steel can have a significant impact.”

Depending on the model, the utilization of Circle Green stainless steel can lead to substantial reductions in CO₂ emissions, ranging from 160kg to 1370kg per machine. This represents a significant environmental benefit for F&B manufacturers striving to minimize their carbon footprint.

The collaboration with Outokumpu marks the beginning of a partnership aimed at exploring further applications of Circle Green across Tetra Pak’s equipment portfolio.

This collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to developing sustainable solutions that support decarbonization efforts across the value chain.

Fiona Liebehenz, vice president of Key Components Plant Solutions and Channel Management at Tetra Pak, highlighted the company’s dedication to innovation and sustainability, emphasizing the incorporation of Circle Green into their product portfolio as a crucial step in reducing upstream emissions while aiding customers in minimizing their environmental impact.

Wheat hits 10-month high on worries over Black Sea crops

(May 28): Wheat briefly touched the highest in 10 months as cold and dry weather in major producers and the ongoing war in Ukraine deepened supply concerns.

Futures climbed as much as 3.3% in Chicago before paring some of the gain. Analysts have been cutting production estimates for top exporter Russia in recent weeks while Ukraine is headed for its driest May on record. Historically low rainfall in Western Australia is also adding to nervousness.

The US Department of Agriculture forecasts global wheat stockpiles may fall to a nine-year low in the coming season, and hedge funds have been trimming net-bearish bets in the American market. Wheat futures in Paris have also been rallying, hitting the highest since March 2023.

SovEcon became the latest forecaster to cut its Russian wheat-harvest estimate on Tuesday, reducing its outlook to 82.1 million tonnes from a previous forecast of 85.7 million tonnes. It cited greater-than-expected damage to winter crops after May frosts. IKAR lowered its estimate on Monday.

The rally is also being partially fueled by growers holding onto stockpiles as they wait for the dust to settle, said Ole Houe, CEO at broker and adviser IKON Commodities. “Growers have all the power, and they are wielding it mercilessly,” he said, adding that when they decide to sell, demand may quickly wane.

China food security law comes into force, aims for absolute self-sufficiency

BEIJING (June 1): China's first food security law aimed at achieving "absolute self-sufficiency" in staple grains came into effect on Saturday, reinforcing efforts by the world's biggest agriculture importer to lower its reliance on overseas purchases.

The law provides a legal framework for existing guidance by the Communist Party for local governments and the agricultural industry to raise food production, although it did not give details on how the law will be implemented.

It includes protection of farmland from being converted to other uses, protecting germplasm resources and preventing wastage.

Passed just six months after its first reading, the rush to adopt the food security law reflects China's urgency to resolve issues that have curbed production, such as a lack of arable land and water resources, labour shortages and a lack of agriculture technology.

The law holds central and provincial governments accountable for incorporating food security into their economic and development plans, ensuring that food supply remains a top priority in the country that has a painful history of famine.

The party will lead the implementation of a national food security strategy "that puts China first" by importing moderately and using advances in science and technology to boost production, according to a provision in the law.

"It shall adhere to the principle of storing grain in the ground and using technology to improve grain production," it said, to ensure "basic self-sufficiency in cereal grains and absolute self-sufficiency in staple grains for food use".

It also stipulates the formation of a national grain emergency plan and a food security monitoring system.

China expanded the definition of "coarse grains" to include millets and oats, in addition to sorghum, barley, buckwheat, mung beans and potatoes. Grains refers to wheat, rice, corn, soybeans and coarse grains.

Entities who violate the law may face a fine ranging from 20,000 yuan (RM12,997) to two million yuan, while individual offenders may be slapped with fines between 20,000 yuan and 200,000 yuan.

The law also said China will "strengthen international food security cooperation and allow international grain trade to play its role." It did not give details.

Analysts said the law is worded vaguely and may not have a significant impact on how China boosts food production.

"It doesn't change the realities on the ground for local officials who were already under significant pressure to deliver on food security," Even Pay, agriculture analyst at Beijing-based consultancy Trivium China, said.

"The food security law enshrines existing practices in law, but isn't set to change anything. Food security was already among the top national priorities, and can't go any higher," she added.

Kenya writes off US$894.14M debt to revitalize sugar and coffee sectors

KENYA – In a bold move to revamp Kenya’s agricultural sector, President William Ruto announced the cancellation of Ksh110 billion (US$841.36M) debts owed by sugar factories and Ksh6.9 billion (US$52.78M) by coffee cooperatives.

The announcement was made during the 61st Madaraka Day celebrations in Bungoma, highlighting a comprehensive plan to revitalize the sugarcane and coffee industries.

President Ruto introduced a new leasing model to ensure prompt payments for cane deliveries, timely wages for factory workers, and annual bonuses for sugarcane farmers.

“The sugar industry is a highly strategic sub-sector that has been the mainstay of local economies in our sugar belt. We are committed to ensuring it returns maximum value to all actors, beginning with the cane grower,” he emphasized.

The President called on relevant agencies to expedite the review process and include proceeds from by-products in the industry. Additionally, he announced the approval of an initial Ksh600 million for seed cane development, part of a larger Ksh2 billion (US$15.3M) investment plan.

In addressing the coffee sector, Ruto outlined measures to boost production from 2 kg to 10 kg per tree and increase annual output from 50,000 metric tons to 102,000 metric tons by 2027.

He highlighted the establishment of a Ksh4 billion coffee cherry fund, with Ksh2 billion (US$15.3M) already paid and the remainder allocated for the 2024/2025 financial year. “This will ensure farmers get good returns for their investments,” Ruto stated.

The President noted, “Agriculture’s direct contribution to our GDP is 25 percent, while its indirect support to other economic pillars such as manufacturing boosts the GDP by 27 percent. Agriculture also employs, directly or otherwise, an estimated 40 percent of our population.”

Additionally, Ruto announced the development of a comprehensive database for farmers and entrepreneurs. This initiative aims to improve access to information, enabling farmers to obtain low-cost farm inputs and access ready markets for their produce.

In November 2023, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua revealed that the government was finalizing modalities for releasing the enhanced coffee cherry advance revolving fund to farmers.

The government has allocated an additional Kes4 billion (US$30.6M) to the fund, supplementing the Sh2.7 billion (US$20.65M) provided earlier, ensuring that deserving farmers benefit.

The Coffee Cherry Fund, established in 2019, is part of broader government efforts to revitalize the coffee sector and provide financial support to farmers.

Keurig Dr Pepper acquires US Kalil Bottling

USA – Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) has announced the acquisition of Arizona-based bottling and distribution company Kalil Bottling Co., marking a significant expansion of its direct-store-delivery (DSD) operations into the state.

Kalil Bottling Co., established in 1948, has been a longstanding partner of KDP, bottling drinks for the company.

This acquisition will add a production facility in Tucson, along with sales and distribution centers in Tucson and Tempe, to KDP’s assets. Upon finalizing the deal, KDP will integrate approximately 425 Kalil Bottling Co. employees into its workforce.

The deal grants KDP bottling and distribution rights in Arizona for popular brands, including Canada Dry, 7Up, A&W, Snapple, and Core Hydration. Kalil Bottling Co. currently serves around 4,500 retail outlets across Arizona, reaching an estimated 7.4 million consumers.

With this acquisition, KDP will operate its first manufacturing, sales, and distribution operations in Arizona. Previously, KDP relied on independent bottlers and distributors, including Kalil Bottling Co., to manage its operations in the state.

“This exciting acquisition strengthens our unique national DSD capabilities and creates opportunities for enhanced scale and brand building in a fast-growing region for beverages,” said KDP CEO Tim Cofer.

“Amplifying our route to market advantage is a key investment priority for KDP, and this strategic move will extend our system’s reach while providing us more direct insight into the local consumer base and stronger retail collaboration.”

KDP opens new office in Brazil

In addition to expanding its operations in Arizona, KDP and its Switzerland-based coffee trading arm, Keurig Trading, have opened a new office in Brazil. This office will focus on green coffee sourcing, logistics, and quality control.

According to KDP, the Brazil office is designed to be a “center of excellence for buying, logistics, risk management and quality within Keurig Dr Pepper’s coffee supply chain.”

In 2023, KDP reported net sales of US$14 billion, a 10.8% increase year-on-year. However, net income dropped by 33.1 percent to US$1.4 billion. The US coffee segment, specifically, generated net sales of US$4.3 billion, up 5.2 percent from the previous year, but income from operations for this segment fell by 7 percent to US$1.2 billion.

In April, after experiencing a 2.1 percent decline in first-quarter sales from its US coffee business in 2024, KDP emphasized the “value” of its products in an effort to counteract declining sales. Overall, the company posted first-quarter net sales of US$3.47 billion, a 3.4 percent increase year-on-year, with a net income of US$454 million, down from US$467 million.

Food prices still high despite falling agricultural prices, World Bank

USA- According to the World bank’s latest food security update for Q1 2024, prices of basic commodities in most middle and low-income countries remain high despite a reduction in prices of agricultural commodities over the past year.

The lender revealed inflation remained fairly high- higher than 5% in 14.5% of high income countries, 31% of upper middle income countries, 63% of lower middle income countries and 59% in low income countries.

The World bank also revealed food price inflation exceeded general inflation in 53% of 166 countries, despite a general decline in agricultural commodity prices.

According to the food security update, the food price inflation index declined by 4% in Q1 2024, which is 9% lower than the previous year. Food sub-components like oils, meals and grains experienced a 5% price decline in Q1 2024.

These price declines were attributed by competitive pricing from harvests in the Black Sea region as well as increased production by major global exporters.

However, these price reductions have not been replicated in the retail and grocery industries. This is mostly because five major food categories are responsible for the sustained food price inflation- veal and beef, non-frozen food, poultry, non-carbonated drinks, fresh produce and snacks.

Prices remained high in these categories because of supply chain issues, specially for those that require some form of value addition. Inputs, machinery and higher transport costs have contributed to the sustained high prices of food commodities, especially for importers charged with import duty. They remain high because of the core inflation pressures.

The food security update highlights African countries as the most affected by high inflation, significantly affecting their spending habits and overall demand.

“African countries are among the most affected with food price inflation, which exceeds the overall inflation in most of the surveyed countries,” the lender said in a statement.

According to the update, there is a need among food industry players in middle and low income countries to enhance their supply chain capabilities. This will ensure faster and more efficient movement of goods, which would help to offset energy costs.

LDC expands into ready-meals sector with acquisition of Konspol Poland

FRANCE – French poultry processing leader LDC is set to acquire the Konspol Poland brand and its factory from agri-food giant Cargill.

Although financial terms of these acquisition were not disclosed, the transaction marks a significant expansion for LDC’s presence in Poland.

With this acquisition, LDC’s Polish subsidiary, Drosed Group, is poised to enter the ready-meals market.

The Nowy Sącz plant will produce a variety of breaded products, burgers, sandwiches, tortillas, and gyozas, among other items.

LDC emphasized that this deal will bolster Drosed Group’s production capabilities, leveraging a modern facility managed by a skilled and experienced team.

The facility, which is situated in Nowy Sącz in southern Poland, achieved a consolidated turnover of €35 million (US$38M) in 2023, as reported by LDC.

Approximately 600 employees currently work at the plant, all of whom will be retained under the new ownership.

The completion of the acquisition is anticipated by the end of the year. Cargill had originally acquired Konspol in 2018.

Drosed Group, which employs around 3,500 people and operates six plants across Poland, reported sales of approximately €370 million last year.

The company’s prominent brands include Drosed, Podlaski, Zagrodowy, and Drop.

This acquisition aligns with LDC’s broader strategy, as the company is also in exclusive negotiations to purchase Pierre Martinet, a local producer of salads and tabbouleh.

The finalization of this deal is expected by the last quarter of 2024, although financial specifics also remain undisclosed.
